Code of Conduct
Dance Marathon at the University of Michigan is a student-run nonprofit dedicated to raising funds and generating awareness for pediatric rehabilitation therapies at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. Participation in Dance Marathon’s programs is subject to the observance of the policies and procedures of Dance Marathon and the University of Michigan. Any member or affiliate who violates this Code is subject to discipline, up to and including removal from the program and prohibition from attending Dance Marathon events.
All DMUM volunteers and participants, including all Leadership Members, dancers, families, and visitors, must understand and appreciate that their conduct and attitudes have the potential to reflect on the organization and its other members, volunteers, participants, and families. Everyone involved with DMUM in any capacity understands that they at all times should aim to use discretion, common sense, and their best judgment; that they should be mindful and respectful of other individuals’ privacy; should be respectful of the time and effort that other individuals are providing to DMUM; and should always act reasonably, respectfully, cooperatively, and in a manner that is in the best interests of DMUM and reflects properly on themselves and DMUM.
- DMUM Dancers and Leadership Members

- Registered members of Dance Marathon commit to participating in all DMUM activities to the fullest extent possible.
- When in attendance at DMUM-sponsored events, DMUM Dancers and Leadership Members will reasonably participate in activities and related programming.
- Except for good reason, DMUM Dancers and Leadership Members will attend all required DMUM meetings.
- Registered members commit to fundraise for Dance Marathon. Funds raised by Dance Marathon will benefit pediatric rehabilitation therapies at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital.
- Except for good reason, DMUM Dancers and Leadership Members will attend and reasonably participate in DMUM fundraising drives and initiatives.
- DMUM Dancers and Leadership Members are expected to set fundraising goals and take initiative and use best efforts to fulfill those goals.
- Registered members of Dance Marathon commit to respectfully engage with DMUM children and their families.
- DMUM Dancers and Leadership Members will warmly interact with all DMUM Families while recognizing appropriate boundaries.
- DMUM Dancers and Leadership Members will be considerate with their communications and be mindful about their conversations within the earshot of children.
- DMUM Dancers and Leadership Members will use discretion with personal communication with DMUM families. DMUM Dancers and Leadership Members may share personal contact information, when appropriate; however, DMUM Dancers and Leadership Members should be circumspect about public and/or private social media interactions with DMUM families. DMUM Dancers and Leadership Members understand that they must use their best judgment with respect to communications and/or social media interaction and that they are ultimately responsible for any such interactions or communications.
- DMUM Dancers and Leadership Members should never communicate directly by telephone, text messaging, email, or social media with any DMUM children.
- Registered members of Dance Marathon commit to participating in all DMUM activities to the fullest extent possible.

- DMUM Families

- Registered Dance Marathon families commit to respectfully engage with DMUM Dancers and Leadership Members.
- Parents of DMUM Families will supervise their children at all DMUM events.
- DMUM Families will reasonably interact with DMUM members while recognizing appropriate boundaries.
- DMUM Families will cooperate with any rules, restrictions, or guidelines provided by DMUM or the University.
- Registered Dance Marathon families commit to respectfully engage with DMUM Dancers and Leadership Members.

- DMUM Volunteers

- Except for good reason, volunteers at DMUM-affiliated programs commit to participate at times assigned by DMUM.
- Volunteers will arrive on time and stay until the end of the scheduled shift.
- Except for good reason, Volunteers will give at least 48 hours’ notice in the event that they can no longer attend the shift.
- If a volunteer fails to give notice of an absence twice, the volunteer may be prohibited from volunteering at DMUM- affiliated programs for the remainder of the academic semester.
- Volunteers at DMUM-affiliated programs commit to fulfilling all designated responsibilities.
- Volunteers will check in with the therapist in charge of the program and follow all instructions.
- Unless an emergency, or unless prior approval is provided, Volunteers will refrain from using electronic devices (such as cell phones, tablets, etc.) while volunteering.
- Volunteers will interact with all children and their families while recognizing appropriate boundaries.
- Volunteers at DMUM-affiliated programs commit to following all hospital rules and procedures.
- Volunteers will refrain from taking photos at clinical sites, including but not limited to, C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and the Pediatric Rehabilitation Center.
- Volunteers will remain compliant with patient privacy protocols and will not disclose any medical information learned.
- Volunteers will not discuss specific children or their stories with friends, family, or other volunteers.
- Volunteers will not accept phone numbers, Facebook, or other social media requests from patients and families met while in a volunteer role.
- Except for good reason, volunteers at DMUM-affiliated programs commit to participate at times assigned by DMUM.

- Visitors

- Visitors commit to respecting all people and spaces at DMUM events.
The activities outlined below are strictly prohibited for any DMUM member or affiliate:
- Abusive language towards any DMUM member, beneficiary, affiliate, or other participant;
- Verbal, physical, or sexual harassment of any DMUM member, beneficiary, affiliate, or other participant;
- Possession or use of alcoholic beverages or controlled substances at sponsored DMUM family events;
- Possession of dangerous or unauthorized materials at DMUM events, such as explosives, firearms, weapons or other similar items;
- Actual or threatened violence toward any individual or group;
- Conduct endangering the life, safety, health or well-being of others;
- All DMUM events are smoke-free, except in designated smoking areas.
Any incidents of misconduct will not be tolerated and can be reported here.
